I wonder if there is a 'typical' path one takes when engaging (or re-engaging) in Christianity. For most of my 20s, I attended church only when visiting the in-laws. I wasn't against the Church - just saw nothing in it for me.
The next stage of my faith walk was the re-engagement. I wasn't that interested in spending a lot of time with the Holy-Rollers, but was surprised to find MBC to not be like that. But I didn't want to get very involved. My perspective is that I was coming to church to BE served, not to find new things to put on my plate.
At some point along the way, the attitude changed from wanting to BE served to BECOMING a servant. I think it is the tangible aspect of service which got to me. By that I mean that while the spiritual side of me was (and is) developing, my passion was ignited by the opportunity to do real service, with the pinnacle perhaps being the years we served as cabin counselors at Judson Hills.
Seems that when you get around to making it be about others - Christ's love breaks through.
I've heard others say that - at least for men - it the opportunity to serve which facilitates the evolution from outsider to watcher to doer to leader.
I think it might go deeper than that: That a congregation without a commitment to constant sacrificial and personal engagement in service to others will be impaired in its ability to disciple the unchurched middle-class suburban male.
That's my 2c worth anyway.
May the Lord be with you squid.

Not sure any of us can use the word 'typical' when it comes to Salvation!
It IS a journey to say the least and so this idea of 'developing' is EXACTLY what a disciple (Grk: Mathetes, i.e. learner)implies.
We all 'learn' in many DIFFERENT ways, and not all the same or on the same track....but to be sure...when the lightbulb goes on, it's because "Christ's love BROKE through"!!!
Peace out brother Paul...thanks for the 2c!!!
